Imagine you just received the bid back for building a beautiful new home five minutes from your job and your spouse heads straight to the Sunday paper for the furniture and appliance ads.

Almost involuntarily you shout. “STOP!!! Crap, I don’t know if we can afford new furniture too.”

No need to worry you can definitely keep your old furniture. It may look dated or have a few dents and scratches, but it will work until you are able to afford a new set. But this article isn’t about how to save money or find the best deals on furniture and appliances, this is a reminder that you may be stuck with your old stuff for a while.

You’re next thought would probably be will my old furniture look good? And that isn’t always easy to imagine. I would suggest talking to your builder to see if they could create a mock-up. Most builders have the ability to generate 3D mock-ups of your home inside and out.

Another option would be to walk-through a couple similar models that the builder has completed to see if you can get a better understanding of the layout.

Still avoiding how to save money I do want to warn you about not taking extra money for your mortgage to pay for furniture and similar items. Do you really want to be paying for it over the length of your loan? Possibly 30 years? You likely will not even own it that long. Just because you can afford it doesn’t mean it is the correct decision.
